BSF Trustee and Medical Advisor Dr. Peter Black Recognized for Lifetime Achievement in Neurooncology at the 2007 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS)
Dr. Peter Black received the Charles Wilson award for lifetime achievement in neurooncology at the recent annual meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), which ran from April 14-19, 2007, in Washington D.C. Presented by the AANS/CNS Section on Brain Tumors, the award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of brain tumor research and therapy. Dr. Black is only the second person to be thus honored in five years.

Dr. Black is chairman of the Departments of Neurosurgery at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital; Neurosurgeon-in-chief at Brigham and Women’s Hospital; Chief of Neurosurgical Oncology at Dana Farber Cancer Institute; and Franc D. Ingraham Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Black is consistently listed in Best Doctors in America and Top Doctors with special interest in surgery for meningiomas, pituitary adenomas, and low-grade gliomas; image-guided minimally invasive neurosurgery; skull base surgery; and brain mapping. He helped to develop the first intraoperative MRI and has used this device extensively to improve brain tumor treatment.  He is a member of the Board of the Brain Science Foundation and an important contributor to its work.

Dr. Black sits on many other review boards and is chairman of the Editorial Board of Neurosurgery and the senior representative of the CNS to the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies. His laboratory has had ongoing funding since 1980, including present RO1 funding.

Founded in 1931 as the Harvey Cushing Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) is a scientific and educational association with over 6,500 members worldwide.
