Cancer Publishes Latest Findings from Dr. Claus and Dr. Black on the Association Between Hormone Use and Meningioma Risk

August 2008 - Led by BSF Scholar Dr. Elizabeth B. Claus, Ph.D., MD and BSF Trustee and Medical Advisor Dr. Peter Black, latest research coming from The Meningioma Consortium finds no statistical evidence of an increased risk of meningioma among users of oral contraceptives. Although not definitive, available data suggest an association between the use of hormone replacement therapy and increased meningioma risk. However, according to these findings (published this month in Cancer), further evaluation of exogenous hormone use in women with meningioma is needed with particular attention to the type of hormone used (i.e., estrogen and/or progesterone), the duration of use, the age of the recipient and the tumor receptor subtype.
