Meningioma Awareness Day 2009:

A Roadmap to Your Journey with Meningioma

October 3, 2009, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Joseph B. Martin Conference Center, Harvard Medical School

Boston, Massachusetts

About Us

The Brain Science Foundation is an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, supporting organization to Brigham and Women’s Hospital and was established by high-tech entrepreneur, Steven Haley and wife, Kathleen, following Steven’s treatment for meningioma in 1997. The Brain Science Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for meningioma and other primary brain tumors and to advancing the understanding of brain function as it relates to these tumors. The Brain Science Foundation supports basic and clinical research, promising new treatments, and opportunities to improve the quality of patient care.

About the Event

The Brain Science Foundation (BSF) is pleased to announce its third annual Meningioma Awareness Day (MAD) for patients and survivors of meningioma, as well as caregivers, families and friends.

Join leading clinicians and healthcare professionals on Saturday, October 3, 2009, from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, at the state-of-the-art Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, to learn about the latest research advancements in meningioma diagnosis, treatment, and therapy as well as related health and support issues.

Our MAD 2009 program will serve as a roadmap in helping patients navigate the various stages in what for some will be a life-long journey with meningioma

  • Education: This focus in our program will provide you with the latest information regarding your diagnosis and details about the opponent with which you are in battle.
  • Empowerment: To help you make informed decisions, discussions will focus on various issues such as managing medications and pursuing new therapies, as well as developing relationships with doctors and health professionals, working with insurers, and other critical topics.
  • Inspiration: Patient testimonies as well as insight and advice from others touched by meningioma will help you learn not only about the most commonly diagnosed brain tumor, but also more about yourself, the loved ones joining you in the fight, and the greater meningioma community.

In addition, MAD 2009 will provide a forum for developing relationships with other patients, doctors, and community members.  This year's intimate venue will provide you with the opportunity to reunite with old acquaintances and make new freinds over a complimentary breakfast, lunch, and special dessert bar.

NEW THIS YEAR:  As an Accredited Program for Nurses, MAD 2009 will offer a special look at the role of nurses in caring for meningioma patients.  Nurses interested in CEU and registration details should contact Tammy Gilson-Hodge at TGILSON-HODGE@PARTNERS.ORG or 617-525-8395.

Our MAD 2009 Program Topics will include:

  • Maximizing the patient-neurosurgeon relationship
  • What children can teach us about meningioma
  • Managing medications and their side effects
  • Meningioma and hormones
  • Integrative medicine
  • New molecular therapies for recurrent and inoperable meningioma
  • Spinal meningioma
  • Navigating insurance issues
  • Caregiving
  • Whole-Person / Quality-of-Life Centric Care
